Friends,
If you’re like me and many Americans, the results of Tuesday’s election caught you by surprise. But now that I’ve had some time to process, take a deep breath, and assess where we are, let me be absolutely clear:
Our food movement is more important now than ever before and we are going to fight harder than we ever have.
As President Barack Obama said in his 2008 Inaugural speech, “Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again.”
Our country may seem divided, but food truly brings us together. A vast majority of Americans — Democrats, Republicans, independents and everyone in between — want Washington to fix our out of balance food system.
The values FPA shares and the vision we hold for creating food policy that works for all Americans is still intact and stronger than ever. We will fight for a food system that ensures that every American has access to healthy, affordable food that is fair to workers, good for the environment and keeps farmers on the land. We will stand united as a check on the Big Food special interests. And, we will keep turning the dial forward towards good food policy and arming the public with information to hold their legislators accountable for their food policy record.
Food is connected to every critical issue facing our nation, which is why we are fighting the good fight for food and we’re not giving up. We’re not going to let Washington turn back the clock on critical child nutrition programs, funding for hungry Americans, water and environmental protections, consumer transparency, or regulations that keep our food safe.
We’re not backing down from the fight. Not by a long shot.
In the coming weeks and months, we’ll be counting on you, our supporters, to join us in action to protect important food and farming programs as we continue forward and united to fix our food system.
Everyone eats, and they’re counting on us.
Tom
