August recess is approaching. Now’s the time for anti-hunger advocates to go full throttle in their outreach to Congress around the American Families Plan, opportunities within the budget reconciliation, Healthy School Meals for All, and SNAP.
Senate Democrats have announced broad agreement on a $3.5 trillion reconciliation package, which is expected to include child nutrition provisions from President Biden’s American Families Plan. The provisions provide a strong foundation to ensure children have access to the nutrition they need year-round. Several congressional leaders, FRAC and others continue to advocate for additional priorities, such as Healthy School Meals for All (offering school meals at no charge to all students), which has been endorsed by hundreds of national, state, and local organizations.
Budget reconciliation instructions will be attached to a Budget Resolution that’s expected to reach the House and Senate floors before the August recess. (See FRAC’s Budget Reconciliation 101). After passage of the final reconciliation bill in the fall, Child Nutrition Reauthorization is expected to proceed.
Take Action Now: Urge Congress to
Tag & Tell Congress to “Picture a Childhood Without Hunger.”
With so much on the line for children’s nutrition and health, we need to show Congress what a childhood without hunger looks like and the importance of the federal nutrition programs. An easy way to do this is just a snapshot — and post — away.
Coordinate with a school, summer food program site (e.g., library, park and recreation center, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club), WIC clinic, or childcare center or family childcare home to get permission to take photos of children engaging in all kinds of enrichment or recreational activities while also receiving nutritious meals. Make sure to secure a photo release form from parents in advance.
