Last weekend we bundled ourselves and our little boy up and headed to Heifer International’s Overlook Farm Learning Center in Rutland. I’m embarrassed to admit this was my first trip to the farm even after living here for several years and being a passionate advocate of sustainable agriculture here and abroad. It was all just as wonderful as I had imagined. The pancakes and home-made sausage were delicious, everyone we met was delightful, and we got to take a tour of the snow-covered farm, meeting the goats, pigs, chickens, AND seeing the sugar shack that made the maple syrup we ate that morning. We bought some locally & sustainably raised meat so that we can enjoy some of the delicious sausage at home as well. I can’t wait to go back in the spring and see the gardens and even more of the property!
If you’re looking for a reason to get out to the farm, one way would be to participate in the Women’s Lambing workshop. Women’s Lambing provides an opportunity for women to immerse themselves in the daily rhythms of an educational farm while learning more about Heifer International’s work to end hunger and poverty. The births of sheep and/or goats are the centerpiece of the experience. Participants will enjoy a blend of facilitated discussions, experiential learning activities, direct interaction and work with farm animals. It’s a beautiful way to spend your spring vacation and learn more about how animals can help lift families out of poverty. The cost is $475 which includes lodging, farm-grown meals, and all programming. The dates are: April 4-7, April 8-11, and April 12-15. Contact Liz Joseph for more information!
