Jeremiah’s Inn is a model social recovery program for men in Worcester. The Inn also operates a food pantry for eligible families within its service area (zip codes 01610, 01602 and 01603. In 2012, Jeremiah’s Inn provided food assistance to nearly 6,000 households, representing more than 13,000 individuals – 30% of them under the age of 18.
The food pantry, like most food pantries, operates year-round, and in order to support it, the Inn has a year-round food drive. They’re always happy to accept fresh organic and/or local produce, as well as other food items.
How to Help Jeremiah’s Inn
Donate to the food pantry or residential program, or run a food drive at school, work or in your community. Check out their Wish List to see what they need most.
Volunteer your time. Jeremiah’s has a whole bunch of different – and very personal – ways that you, your family or your company can help out with a few hours of time. In addition to these, they’re always looking for people who are willing to share their skill sets with residents or with the organization. If you want to help, just call and talk to them. These are a few of the standard volunteer opportunities available at Jeremiah’s Inn.
Food Pantry Distribution – help distribute food during food pantry hours, or help with the weekly shopping at the Food Bank. There is also often a need to help stock and sort foods in the pantry storeroom. Contact: Alexandra at 508-755-6403.
Evening Meal Program: Cook and serve a meal to residents at the Inn. Contact Bhumika Regmi at the above number for available dates and needs.
Maintenance Help: The Inn needs help with general maintenance, painting, yard work, upkeep and other tasks around the facility. In particular, they’re looking for people willing to get down on their knees to install flooring. Check with Ray at the above number to see what they need, or to offer your help with something else.
Adopt a Room: Help create a warm, supportive environment for residents by updating one of the residence rooms. Some of the tasks that need doing include painting walls and ceilings, replacing worn furniture and fixtures, installing new flooring, blinds and bedding.
Bake a Birthday Cake: We love this one. Add your name to the birthday cake bakers list. Jeremiah’s will call you and ask you to bake (or buy) a birthday cake when one of their men has a birthday. Bhumika Regmi is your contact person for birthday cake duty.
There are also internship and volunteer opportunities for students – call Jeff – and a need for volunteer gardeners in the spring.
Deb – thank you so much for taking the time to highlight Jeremiah’s Inn for your 31 days of giving! What a special tribute! All of the staff and board work hard each day to help those we serve but it’s impossible to do what we do without the help and support of the community; specifically our volunteers, donors and funders. Which is why recognition such as your post means so much to us! Again, thank you for validating the importance of the work we do. We look forward to continuing and building upon our relationship with “the Council” Merry Christmas, and blessings to all!
Correction: Jeremiah’s Inn is a Social Model (not model social). No biggie, but wanted to make sure there was no confusion.
Thanks, Janelle – I should know better. I’ll fix that!
Deb, Thank you for your well-written and informative postings about the Worcester organizations that are working, every day, to address food needs in the community. It’s great to learn about the many volunteer opportunities, where each of one of us can make a difference in the lives of others, in our community.
